Before You Begin

If you're in the market considering making money at auctions, do you think auctions are only for getting rid of accumulated "stuff" from your coat closets? If so, have I got great news for you ... and you can make money from it as well. Remember, money is grown by saving it too!

Did you realize that at auctions, you can...

Discover unique surprise gifts for your friends and loved ones (I've bought everything from a BallroomDancing mousepad for one person to the 10/28/04 Boston edition of the Red Sox winning the World Series for another friend to an early 1800s history teacher's book for my child's teacher to the inaugural menu of Lyndon B Johnson for a Democratic friend to ... you get the idea.

Obtain coupons or gift cards for big name brand stores (we're talking Dell, Staples, the Sharper Image, Home Depot and the like)

Get brand name new merchandise for a hefty discount (just look at the new cameras, PDAs, clothing and more that are available...)

Buy or sell a car online (you'll even see new cars offered as well!).

Find great career, business and evening apparel and tools (again often new with tags or still in the box)

Smart savvy shoppers can not only find just about everything online for sale at eBay...and can also save their household income a good chunk of money as well. It's simply good planning to explore what eBay has to offer you. And that only scratches the tip of the iceberg regarding how online auctions like eBay can benefit you!

Tip 1 - Not *quite* a walk in the park...

Yes, it's possible to make money by selling on eBay, and yes, there are people out there who make very very good money indeed.

That's the good news.

The obvious news is that it is one heck of an effort to do so! Now, don't get me wrong - if you're of the right temperment and can methodically follow up on details and processes, you can really enjoy yourself and increase your income as well. But! It takes bunches of time and bunches of patience. I should know - I am a certified Education Specialist from eBay, sold items on eBay myself, and have written three books about eBay (one of which is tailored to newcomers to online auctions).

In Book 3, I relate the following story:

    I well-remember the time I decided to sell children's clothing online. I had bought a huge bunch at a garage sale , took marvelous pictures, wrote up yummy copy, and went to work!

    After tallying up the amount of hours I had spent on packaging the clothing, driving the post office, writing up all the ads and the like, I determined that I had made (I hope you're sitting down for this)

    Less than minimum wage!

    Wheeeeeeee!

Then again, I did sell a book I bought for $1 for $150 as well. Like anything else on the Internet, making money on eBay does require an effort. But it can certainly pay off!
