One of the best benefits to the Rich Hermit lifestyle is you can take off when you’d like.
Summer is coming…and that means I have to begin Camp Ling! What’s Camp Ling, I hear you ask?
Well, now that school is over, I need to devise activities for me family. Joy! Not only do they have to be fun and entertaining, they also have to have some aspect of education in them as well (I’m a firm believer in always keeping one’s academic skills sharp).
So! This summer, it appears that my family is addicted to Runescape. Runescape, for all clueless parents like me, is a roll-playing game where (get this) the goal is to make money to enjoy all the benefits Runescape has to offer.
Make money? How can I not approve! The thing is, one makes money by learning trades/fighting dragons/and various other ways I have yet to discover. All of Runescape is set within a Medieval-type environment….and it appears to be virtualy unlimited in its scope!
So. For this summer, I have to sit down and add Runescape to my kids’ academics achievements. For one week, they can explore making money by smithing and then selling their swords. How fast will it take? How easy will it be? They can take down notes on their achievements…and then turn their attention, to, oh, say, woodcutting. They can build and sell canoes! etc.etc.etc.
But a good fun program has to go farther than that. My kids love writing stories…so I have to create a 2-month long story-telling project…with lots of sub-projects within it. Perhaps every week they could write a “what if” story….what if I was already a Black Knight? What if I had cornered the market on flax fields? etce.tc.etc.
And math! I think I’ll build up their math projects around Runescape as well. If Og needed to smelt 43 iron swords, but 23% of each sword ate up 12% of his profits…. my gosh, even I would have problems with that. Hmmmm. I suppose I’ll figure out something….
But at least they’ll have a blast doing all of the above…as it will all work towards making them better Runescape players as well. And if they also gain organizational skills, master story-telling and how to write essays, develop project management skills for goals months down the road….well, I won’t complain.
